India's Independence Day
August 15, 1947 was a big day for Rohin's country. On this day, India was given its independence from Great Britain. Independence 300 years in the making, as India had been under British rule starting in the 1600's.
Britain announced its intention to relieve India from its rule in February of 1947, and by March of 1947 Lord Mountbatten, Viceroy of India, was placed in charge of the transition.
In August of 1947, New Delhi's Constituent Assembly held a special session and at midnight, the Assembly affirmed its service to India as an independent nation! Lord Mountbatten was appointed as the first Governor General of India, and Mr. Nehru served as the first prime minister of the newly Independent India.
At 8:30 a.m. on August 15, the new government of India was sworn in. And at 10:30 a.m., India's red, green and white was raised for the very first time, against the backdrop of the Council House. India was an Independent Nation!
Rohin and his family have big plans for Independence Day. They raise the flag at their home, and tune in to listen to the Prime Minister's annual speech. Then they pack a picnic lunch and take their kites to the park to fly.
Rohin usually runs into his friends at the park, and they race their kites back and forth across the sky. The kites symbolize the freedom given to India over 50 years ago.
Rohin and his family wish everyone a happy Independence Day!
