KIDS UNITED
St. Valentines Day is observed around the world on February 14th . In Switzerland, it is celebrated by sending flowers, cards and candy to friends and family. Heidi and Niklas receive chocolate every St. Valentines Day. This year Heidi wants to send some to all her friends. Heidi's Circle of Friends includes children from all over the world. She wants to be sure they are able to share some of her Swiss milk chocolate, so Heidi is sending them milk chocolate scented lotion!
Chocolate is one of Heidi's favorite foods, and her country is famous for it. Daniel Peter, a man from Switzerland, invented Swiss milk chocolate around 1875. He was the first person to mix chocolate, which has a naturally bitter taste, with sugar and milk. The Swiss became famous for perfecting chocolate into the sweet and smooth tasting treat Heidi loves today.
Heidi's favorite part about Valentines Day, other than the chocolate of course, is looking through all the Valentines Niklas and she receive from their circle of friends! They love to see the similarities and differences between how their friends celebrated Valentines Day. Last year, Hans in Germany sent Heidi flowers. Heidi and Niklas also received American greeting cards from Tommy, Sean, Leilani and Susie! Heidi's favorite valentine last year was from Andrew. He sent a traditional Australian card. It was almost two feet long and came in a box! The card was wrapped with beautiful fabric and covered in trinkets. Chehn sent Heidi and Niklas a card in August explaining the Chinese celebration Qi Qiao Jie, a romantic festival similar to St. Valentines Day, is celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar. That means Chehn and his friends in China don't celebrate until August. Heidi and Niklas had a wonderful St. Valentines Day last year and are looking forward February 14th in 2004.
Heidi wishes all children across the world a happy St. Valentines Day. |
