KIDS UNITED
Australia Day is going to be celebrated on January 26th all over Australia! It is a day of national celebration of the anniversary of the unfurling of the British flag in Sydney cove. At Andrew's school, they teach the children about how special it is to be Australian! They have an Aussie of the month poetry competition that encourages the students to be proud of themselves, their community and Australia. The monthly winner gets a badge that they pass on to the new winner at the end of the month! Andrew has the badge for the month of January, and will participate in a presentation of children on Australia day! At Andrew's school they also sing their national anthem!
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free,
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share:
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
On Australia Day, Andrew is going to head into Victoria with his family for the day of celebration in the city! His family participates in the Sheep Dog trials, which keeps his parents pretty busy, but they always make sure Andrew can see the sights. Victoria 's celebration includes many activities and contests to participate in, and there are so many people to see! There are plenty of races to watch and museums to see. There are parades and ceremonies and the night ends with fireworks all over the country!
At the events, the people recite the Australian Day oath:
We are Australian. We stand here proudly; brave strong, open and tolerant. We stand here equal, fair, true and free. Together we will build a future, but we will not forget the past. We will stand together. We are Australians.
Andrew is looking forward to Australia Day!! |
